I suppose that a good way to break into my new blog is to feature one of my two APH OTPs: TurkIce.
I think that we can all agree on the unexpectedness of this pairing; suddenly, two characters who have zero interaction are suddenly brought together by Himeruya, and interest in them spikes. Not only have they been featured as a prominent pairing during the Christmas 2010 Bloodbath (easily the best one to date), but they cropped up again during the 2011 one as well.
Historically, they really only had one true encounter, which was the Turkish Abductions in 1627 on part of Barbary Corsairs who were the pirates of the Ottoman Empire. For about a month, these pirates raided Iceland and abducted between 400 to 800 Icelanders, and it is an event that is marked in Icelandic history. Although the numbers are in dispute, it could be seen as a record for those Barbary pirates, as Iceland was as far into Europe as they came.
Although their pairing does seem unexpected, many other pairings like them have resulted, even with significantly less historical background to them, though bolstered by canon. Giripan, or Greece/Japan, seems to have a quaint historical backdrop, as it simply resulted as the beginning of relations between the two nations over a hundred years ago. And yet, because of canonical endorsement, this pairing exploded as a solid OTP of the series, within the ranks of GerIta and AusHun.
Personality-wise, I feel that Iceland and Turkey are perfectly complimentary of each other. Other pairings that share similarities are CubaCan, PruCan, SuFin, DenNor, and even Germancest. As TV Tropes sees them, Iceland is the sensitive guy and Turkey is the manly man. Juxtaposed together, Turkey’s brash and bold personality compliments Iceland’s cool and shy nature rather well, in my opinion.
Okay, this was turning waaaaay too essayish! The real reason I like them? They just seem perfect for each other~~ They always seem to get along really well, and I feel like the lack of angst between them really creates a cozy atmosphere of friendship and lovey-dovey-ness and merp. <3 I honestly think that Hima ships them, too, that darn king of shiptease~ After all, the course of the comic is entirely in his hands, and I think that he could’ve just passed them over if he wasn’t interested…. Honestly, they’re becoming my new favorite OTP, and are catching up with ChuNi rather quickly. Plus, the way they interacted during the 2010 bloodbath was honestly heart-warming in a million ways. And, I guess I also like the fact that it’s an interracial pairing, since most Turks have Arabic origins and Nords are as hella white as they come lol. Honestly, since Iceland is projected to look 16-17, it’s definitely not a squicky shota pairing or anything. Plus, I love both of their countries IRL. Istanbul is goddamn gorgeous, and Iceland is the New Zealand of the north. I just feel that this pairing is a shallow glass begging to be filled, and that the possibilities for them are endless…which is why I love writing fanfiction for these two.
